The "Gheorghe Asachi" Techn ical University of Iaşi is one of the oldest and important universities in Romania. It was in 1813 when the scholar Gheorghe Asachi founded the first school for surveyors and civil engineers. This school can be considered the nucleus of the technical higher education in Moldova. Later on, the school is developed within the Michaelian Academy (1835), and afterwards within the University of Iasi, established in 1860.In 1948, by the reform of education The "Gheorghe Asachi" Polytechnic Institute of Iasi was set up, its name being changed again under a new reform of education when, on 17 May 1993, it became The "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iasi. After a series of internal reforms, The "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iasi has 11 faculties: The Faculty of Automatic Control and Computer Engineering, The Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Environment Protection, The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Installations, The Faculty of Machine Manufacturing and Industrial Management, The Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technology, The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, The Faculty of Hydrotechnics, Geodesy and Environmental Engineering, The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, The Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, The Faculty of Textile - Leather Engineering and Industrial Management and The Faculty of Architecture. The "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iaşi offers 4-year programmes, awarding the degree of Bachelor of Science (Engineer), as well as post-graduate programmes awarding the degrees of Master of Science with duration between a year and two years, and that of Ph.D., with duration between three to four years. The degree of "Architect" is awarded at the end of a 6-year programme. There is also a post graduate school of Management. Nowadays a number of approximately 15000 students are following the study programmes of the university. |
