The new technologies of 21st century shift the region of their application to the more extreme conditions. The reason is to enhance their effectivity, portfolio of their application as well as productivity. Development and design of new (nano-)materials, which are able to operate at these extreme conditions is necessary. Centre of excellence: Centre for materials, layers and systems for extreme condition applications has an ambition to move on the research and development of such materials to the level of other European research institutions. Within the centre are established three laboratories: Laboratory of inorganic materials for application in the extreme conditions, Laboratory of polymeric materials for advanced applications and Laboratory of bio-fuel-cells utilizing the nanostructures.

The Centre focuses on the production of complexly shaped surfaces with using 5-axis technologies (milling, turning, ultrasonic machining). Centre builds up equipment with high-HSC, multi-axis and multi-energetic technologies, unique in Slovakia. Facilities Center - 5-axis CNC milling center enable research in the areas of design and manufacturing complicated open shaped surfaces, CNC lathe with mandrel extend research into area of so-called complexly shaped surfaces and Ultrasonic Machine CNC conduct research into area of so-called difficult-to-machine and complexly shaped surfaces.

The scientific orientation of IMR is towards the development and applications of new technologies and the development and testing of new materials. To achieve these aims the research has concentrated on: The physical and chemical nature of transformation and transportation phenomena taking place in materials with different chemical compositions (metals, ceramics, etc.) and microstructures (polycrystallic, amorphous, composites, etc.). The physical and mechanical properties and the deformation and fracture characteristics of different materials in different up to extreme environments and temperatures. They are studied and evaluated in relation with processing methods, microstructure and external conditions. The lifetime and mechanical reliability of specimens and components are predicted on the basis of the experimental results.
